A post I made on the IRC a few days back
First, this is maybe the wrong forum for this. Apologies in advance. I’ve been involved with UCB in some capacity since 2007 (2006?). My view on improv has undergone dozens of shifts since that time, and I’m sure it will continue to shift as I, with any luck, continue to learn. But I wanted to send an improv crush out to the people who are making the glue moves, the moves that...

The Daddy Complex: Things To Worry About →
thedaddycomplex:
F. Scott Fitzgerald ended a letter to his 11-year-old daughter with this list of simple life advice. Though it was written in 1933, I think the points hold up. And not just for daughters, but everyone… Yes, adults, too. (From Letters of Note, via newdadsstrut)
Things to worry about: …
For Truman, and everyone.

My wife and I had an exceptional experience at CHOP during her very difficult pregnancy. I cannot imagine the same doctors who helped us so ably and compassionately being associated with the callousness this mother describes. I can only hope that there is some answer that satisfies the instantaneous rage that a blog post like this elicits.
Can there be a logical explanation? A...

Update on the PC Richard situation
Ahoy.
After two months of politely asking tens of PC Richard’s employees to help me get my dryer fixed/replaced, all it took was three hours of blackout rage and a twitter war to get the job done lickety-split.
Along the way, I met a fellow on twitter who interceded on behalf of PC Richard, said I looked like a gay suicide bomber, demonstrated a true ignorance of the working of English,...

Have A Toast
“I have not suggested any investigations.” Damn straight. 2 years and 2 months in and we’ve just ditched the neurologist, or he ditched us. Not something the typical parent rejoices over, but this letter elicited a few high-fives.
Today is a sleep-in day for my wife, who never gets sleep-in days. Truman is singing along to “Rolling in the Deep”, but I know...

Caught On Camera of the Day: Last week we learned that Scott Olsen was not the only Iraq war veteran severely injured at the Occupy Oakland raid on October 25th.
32-year-old Kayvan Sabeghi suffered a lacerated spleen after being beaten by Oakland PD officers near the protesters’ encampment in Frank Ogawa Plaza. He was taken to jail and reportedly denied medical attention for 18...
This Life
With Kit, Age 7, at the Beach We would climb the highest dune, from there to gaze and come down: the ocean was performing; we contributed our climb. Waves leapfrogged and came straight out of the storm. What should our gaze mean? Kit waited for me to decide. Standing on such a hill, what would you tell your child? That was an absolute vista. Those waves raced far, and cold. “How...

This is the video that proves Oakland police shot a tear gas canister in the face of an Iraq war vet (who was just standing there, doing nothing by the way). He is now getting brain surgery and is in critical condition. This is what a police state looks like.
This happened in the United States.
This is one of the most beautiful essays that I... →

From the New York Times: “How do you parent without a future, knowing that you will lose your child, bit by bit?” It is written by the mother of a terminally-ill child. “The only task here,” she says, “is to love.”
A quick yet powerful read about the situation of a mother and her son. Heartbreaking.
Military Dad Surprises His Daughter →
I mean COME ON. The little girl in this video is going to destroy you. I could watch military families reunite forever.

I thought this article from NPR brought up some valuable points, even if I disagree with some of its suggestions. Also, honest question: would your opinion of the content of this article change if the author had been male?

The Math Prize for Girls →
To completely brown nose for a minute, my company is awesome. This type of thing is some course-correcting, money-where-your-mouth-is, feminist stuff, and I’m incredibly proud of both the contest and the publicity it’s starting to receive. I mean, COME ON.
By the way, the math these girls are doing would kick your ass, I bet you a dollar. It’s not high school math, even...

Haha, well done.

Have seen variations of this many times, but this is my favorite so far. Particularly liked the fish at the end.

I was shocked to find that this could possibly have ever been on television. The victim of this crime was drugged, tied up, then mutilated while he was awake. Watch as a room full of people broadcast into millions (ok…maybe thousands? Never heard of this show before now) of homes openly mock him.
Please, universe, tell me that we live in a world in which we all agree that the...

At the two minute mark of this video, one of my tutoring company’s many pro bono initiatives is detailed on CNN. As one of the original LEDA teachers, I taught the former student (Jesus Franco) interviewed in this clip. If you watch the entire video, you can also see Deepak Chopra talk at length about a pretty ridiculous acronym he came up with. LEDA is amazing. And, by the way, the...

Missed the Besser lecture and other stuff at the Del Close Marathon to do this instead. C isn’t crazy about blog appearances, so this vid may only stay up for a little bit.
Over the past few months, I’ve had four auditions for the upcoming production of Godspell on Broadway. It was a cool opportunity, and a fun way to dabble in the world of professional auditioning, a world from which I’ve been effectively absent for almost 10 years. If I did anything that was worth noticing, it was the performance I eventually gave of the video posted above.

The Quiet Storm: 9 Mindfulness Rituals →
dirtcrumbgoddess:
Ritual isn’t about doing a routine mindlessly. It’s a way of building something good into your life, so that you don’t forget what’s important. Done mindfully, a ritual can remind you to be conscious. Done mindlessly, a ritual is meaningless.

Male Privilege
I want to know more about this concept. I’ve spent the last several hours reading articles that reference the idea (“Schrödinger’s Rapist” was the one I think I understood and appreciated the most), but I’m looking for materials to learn more; ideally, the tumblr-verse would have some recommendations that express well-reasoned and diverse opinions/definitions/etc....
